It’s Monday morning, and you’re back at work after a perfect weekend. Over the hum of conversations, you catch snippets of golf talk and suddenly, you’re intrigued. Before you know it, your Google searches have shifted from “food near me” to “how to get into golf.”
How to Get Into Golf: A Beginner's Guide
Mar 03, 2025Sadie Martinez
Getting started with golf doesn’t have to be overwhelming. I like to keep things simple, so here’s a straightforward fast track for anyone new to the game.
Resist the temptation to buy an expensive set of clubs straight off the rack. As a beginner, all you really need for your first trip to the driving range is an iron and a driver. Borrowing or buying used clubs is a smart way to test the waters without overcommitting.
Think of it like buying a pair of shoes, you wouldn’t grab the first pair without knowing your size or what they feel like on your feet. Golf clubs work the same way. Ease into the game, and after 2-4 months, if you’re hooked, let’s book an appointment with one of Chris Cote’s Golf Shop trusted fitters. They’ll help you find a starter set tailored to your needs and goals.
One of the best kept secrets in golf is that a great swing starts with the basics. Mastering the fundamentals like grip, stance, and alignment will set you up for long-term success.
That’s why I highly recommend signing up for an intro-to-golf clinic. These beginner programs are perfect for learning the essentials, and you’ll meet other golfers who are just starting out, too. While it might be tempting to let a friend teach you, they may skip over critical basics like setup. And here’s the truth: your setup is more than half the swing. Even a great swing won’t send the ball where you want it to go if your setup is off.
We offer a ton on intro to golf clinics at our Portland and Southington locations. For more information and available dates, check out our clinic page.
Once you’ve got the basics down, take a moment to reflect on your goals. Maybe you’re happy hitting the range occasionally, or perhaps you’re ready to take the plunge and join a golf league. Whatever your goals may be, go for it! Golf is a game for everyone, and there’s always room to grow.
